“We asked”

Participants of the International Lomonosov Language Camp Berlin share their experiences.

Anna O., 16 years

Mexico · International Language Camp

Let me start by saying that this isn't my first experience at a camp abroad. It's already my third summer camp, but the first one where I'm learning German. Taking part in an international summer language camp in Berlin made a deep impression on me. The way the kids got along with each other was exceptional – I've never been to such a friendly camp before. I was really happy to make new friends I'm still in touch with today.

I'm convinced that going to a holiday camp abroad means much more than just learning a new language and getting to know a foreign culture. It's also about developing communication skills and gaining a bit of independence. The kids learn to live far away from home and see how people in other countries go about their daily lives.

This summer camp was an unforgettable new experience for me, and I am very grateful for it.

International Language Camp

My stay at the summer camp on the International Lomonosov Campus in Berlin left a deep impression on me. Thanks to this wonderful opportunity, I got to know the fascinating city of Berlin and its rich history. I was especially impressed by Sanssouci Park in Potsdam – a place that has stayed with me ever since.

International camps like this one matter a lot for kids today, because they let them experience from an early age how people live in different countries. At the same time, they get the chance to learn German and improve their communication skills.

Of course, kids at a camp like this miss their families. Luckily, I was able to spend the whole time with my brother, which gave me a sense of closeness and of feeling at home.

Finally, I want to say that the Lomonosov School gave me valuable insights into life in Germany. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my German teacher at the language camp, Ms Wallburg, with all my heart. Her wonderful, outstanding lessons really inspired me. Thank you so much, and I wish you continued success and joy in your work!

Kazakhstan · International Language Camp

The trip to Berlin and taking part in the summer camp left a positive impression on me. The atmosphere at the camp was both friendly and warm, and this educational trip was extremely valuable to me. It gave me the chance to experience life in another country and the everyday life of kids in Berlin up close.

I had the opportunity to visit the International Lomonosov School and meet students from different countries. It would make me very happy to continue my education at this school together with my new friends. As a saying from Kyrgyzstan goes: "It is better to see once than to hear a thousand times." This encounter broadened my horizons and deepened my understanding of other cultures.

So I would like to sincerely thank the organisers and everyone who took part in this project. It was a wonderful and enriching experience!

Kyrgyzstan · International Language Camp

Berlin fascinated me with its history, architecture and nature. It was especially interesting for me to get to know Berliners better. I was impressed by how easily they open up to things and appreciate the beauty of their surroundings. That is something we can learn from the locals.

At international camps like this, young people learn to connect and communicate with people from different cultures. You leave your comfort zone, become more independent and, as a wonderful bonus, make friends all over the world.

For me personally, the language barrier disappeared, and my German and English improved a lot. I learned how to find a common language with others. I truly believe every teenager should have the chance to take part in a camp like this.

From Mexico to Berlin: Sofia’s adventure on the Lomonossow Campus

This school year, Sofia, an exchange student from Mexico, is part of campus life at the International Lomonossow School. She came to Berlin in August 2025 and has been in Grade 11 since the start of the school year. MITRAfun met Sofia at school and talked to her about her experiences so far. For upper-school students at Sofia’s school in Mexico, an exchange year in Germany is compulsory. She chose to spend this year at the Lomonossow School to learn alongside German students and gain exciting intercultural experiences. Here are some of the impressions she shared with us.

„I learn something new every day and feel more and more independent.“
— Sofia
  1. MITRAfunPlease introduce yourself briefly. How old are you? Where exactly in Mexico are you from?

Sofia: My name is Sofia. I’m 16 years old and I’m from Mexico City.

  2. MITRAfunWhich school do you normally attend in Mexico, and what year are you in there?

Sofia: I go to the Colegio Alemán Alexander von Humboldt and I’m in Grade 10.

  3. MITRAfunWhich languages do you speak – and which would you still like to learn?

Sofia: I speak Spanish, English, German, Serbian and a little Italian. First I want to improve my Italian, and later I’d like to learn Arabic.

  4. MITRAfunWhat expectations or ideas did you have when you came to Berlin and the International Lomonossow School?

Sofia: I came to Berlin expecting to meet new friends and cultures and to gain lots of new experiences.

  5. MITRAfunHow long have you been in Berlin now, and how long will you be staying in total?

Sofia: I’ve been in Berlin since last August and I’m staying until August 2026.

  6. MITRAfunWhat was your first impression of Berlin? What feels completely different here compared with Mexico?

Sofia: I liked Berlin a lot at first sight. I had already visited the city with my family. What surprised me is that almost no shops or restaurants are open here on Sundays, whereas in Mexico everything is open until at least 4 p.m.

  1. MITRAfunDuring your time in Germany you live on the Lomonossow Campus. Do you live alone or do you have roommates? And how do you like living together there?

Sofia: I live in a single room on campus and I really like it! I learn something new every day and feel more and more independent.

  2. MITRAfunAnd what are your impressions of the school so far? Has anything surprised you – maybe differences from the school system in Mexico?

Sofia: I find it interesting that school uniform is compulsory here. At my school in Mexico you only have to wear the school clothes for PE.

  3. MITRAfunWhich subjects do you enjoy most here? Is there anything that particularly inspires or interests you?

Sofia: I enjoy biology and German the most. I’m also interested in philosophy and anatomy.

  4. MITRAfunHave you been able to make friends here yet – on campus or at school?

Sofia: Yes, I’ve already made a few friends. Mostly on campus, because that’s where I spend most of my time. But I find the people at school very nice too.

  5. MITRAfunHave you been on a few trips around the city yet? Which places have you liked best so far – and which do you definitely still want to visit?

Sofia: I’ve already been on a few trips, and I especially liked Museum Island. In the future I’d still like to visit the Friedrichstadt-Palast.

  6. MITRAfunWhat do you like doing in your free time here in Berlin? Do you take part in leisure activities or offers on campus?

Sofia: In my free time I love reading and I crochet a lot. I also join the trips that the campus supervisors organise.

  7. MITRAfunHave you travelled within or outside Germany during your stay yet?

Sofia: I haven’t travelled outside Berlin yet, but later on I’d love to discover more of Germany.

  8. MITRAfunAnd a look into the future: what are your plans after school? Is there a particular degree or career you dream of – and where could you imagine living or studying?

Sofia: In the future I want to study medicine and become a heart surgeon. Or maybe criminology after all! I could imagine studying in Germany or in England.

Thank you, Sofia! We wish you a wonderful rest of your time on campus and every success at the Lomonossow School!
